Mural Lesson
Topic: Art / Cycle 5/6
Time: Duration 1hour
Objectives: For students to work together and have fun while at the same time creating co-operative art.
Competencies: Visual Arts: To produce media works in the visual arts.
Cross Curricular Competencies: To work with others & to use creativity
Materials: Students will need large pieces brown paper (5-6 feet each), pencils, and pastels.
Introduction: Students will be divided into 6 groups of 5. Students will then start the lesson by playing a game. They are playing the model and the blind artist. One person in the group will be the blind artist. Another will be the clay. A group member must make a silly pose and the blind artist must sculpt the clay to match his peer without looking.
Development:
1. After playing the game, one student must lie down on the brown paper (maintaining his silly pose) and his/her group members must trace the body.
2. Members of the group must now brainstorm and come to a consensus on what to turn their traced shape into. They can choose an animal or something silly, but not a person.
3. Group members must work together to colour their image and finish the creation.
Assessment: Assessment will be based upon student participation and the final work of art.
Classroom management: I will circulate the room and offer suggestions and guidance. I want to ensure all group members are participating equally.
Conclusion: When the works of art are finished, group members will come in front of the class and show their peers what they have created. Afterwards I will hang the large murals in the hall for display purposes.
