Why I teach....

 Reflective Letter

There was a period in my life where I did not feel fulfilled, or that I was doing something productive in society. Teaching fills that void, as well as being something that I just generally love doing and am passionate about. I am hoping to make a difference in the learning and lives of young students, and I want to be good at what I do, and do it properly. I hope to become a reflective teacher, who will better help prepare students to be reflective learners. In essence, we are always learning, and on that note, I believe it will be important to constantly keep myself informed on new learning strategies, and issues that may arise. You might not agree with everything you see and learn, but it will be important to pick and choice what elements you want to incorporate into your own teaching philosophy.  I was touched by a story I heard about a teacher who was asked by his friends what kind of curriculum he would be teaching that year. His answer was “I don’t know. I haven’t met my students yet.” I want to be that kind of progressive thinker. One cannot help but pass a little bit of themselves along in how they present themselves, but as long as you are adaptable and open to change, you will always be able to examine your own personal biases and overcome them.

While doing my stage I realized that children in the same classroom could be at many different levels of development. Process can sometimes be very slow, and I felt that was a very important realization for me. I might have many grandiose ideas and plans in my head, but in the end it’s the children who count.

Many of the key questions I created in my working portfolio were issues that I was interested in examining further. I learnt a great deal through hands on interaction and observation of my CT and the classroom in which I was placed.
